Fair Use Policy

Memory

We set a limit on the amount of memory you can consume per namespace to protect the APPUiO Cloud zone from resource abuse. See the Default Quota documentation for details.

We bill all memory usage. Additionally we bill memory reservations which exceed the usage. See APPUiO Cloud pricing for details.

CPU

We set a limit on the amount of CPU you can consume per namespace to protect the APPUiO Cloud zone from resource abuse. See the Default Quota documentation for details.

We currently bill CPU usage or reservations which exceed the fair use ratio determined by the APPUiO Cloud zone’s underlying compute resources. The fair use memory to CPU ratio for each zone is listed in the APPUiO Cloud portal. See APPUiO Cloud pricing for details.

Storage

We set a limit on the amount of PVCs and for some storage classes the amount of storage you can consume per namespace to protect the APPUiO Cloud zone from resource abuse. See the Default Quota documentation for details.

We bill storage based on your PVC’s sizes. See APPUiO Cloud pricing for details.

There’s currently no well-defined fair use policy for storage bandwidth or IOPS. If your namespace doesn’t consume more than a few 100MiB/s of storage bandwidth or a couple hundred IOPS on one of the storage classes cephfs-fspool-cluster or rbd-storagepool-cluster, there’s nothing to worry about. We may reach out to an organization if we see unusually high storage bandwidth or IOPS utilization for one of their namespaces.

Storage classes ssd and bulk (and their encrypted counterparts) are backed by cloudscale.ch volumes. The fair use policy for cloudscale.ch is defined in their ToS.

Non-compute cluster resources

We limit the amount of non-compute cluster resources you can consume per namespace to protect the APPUiO Cloud zone from resource abuse. See the Default Quota documentation for details.

Network

We currently don’t have a well-defined fair use policy in regards to network bandwidth or concurrent connections. Notably, we currently don’t configure any limits regarding network bandwidth or connection count on user workloads.

In our experience, the most limiting factor in terms of network utilization on APPUiO Cloud is the amount of concurrent connections. However, if the number of concurrent connections to a namespace doesn’t exceed a couple hundred connections for longer periods of time, there’s nothing to worry about. We’ll try to reach out to organizations if we see abnormally high connection counts directed to one or more of their namespaces over longer periods of time.

Network bandwidth and packet utilization for a namespace can be checked in the APPUiO Cloud zone’s web console in developer mode under "Observe" for the project you’re interested in. Scroll down to the "Current Network Usage" panel.
